Bridget has started school… but there’s a real danger she won’t finish. The reason? Bridget is often sick with bronchitis, and her family are too poor to afford treatment. Sometimes there’s not even enough money to buy food, so Bridget has to stay at home then too.
Her mum Catherine says the reason they’re so poor is she never received a proper education. She can’t read or write, so she’s never been able to get a good job. And if Bridget needs help with homework Catherine can’t even do that. Today there are 93 million children who aren’t able to go to school. Unless you and I help, these children face being trapped in poverty forever. With never enough to eat, never having proper health care, never living the life of dignity and security you and I take for granted. You can provide the most urgently needed school start essentials like: • school desks and chairs so children don’t have to sit on rocks • school books so children don’t have to write in the dust • text-books for teachers who only have blackboards and chalk • classrooms for schools where 100 children share a single room With a good education, a child is better equipped to secure a job, becoming self-sufficient and achieve their dreams. For Bridget that means studying to be a Doctor, "I want to take care of my sick friends and relatives."
